Course Description:

This course is designed to be an introduction to the concepts of information systems and use of computers in business and related fields. Topics covered include: history of computers, types of computers, data communications, file processing, computer careers, systems development and an introduction to personal computer applications software (word processing, electronic spreadsheets, and database management programs).

Instructor's Comments:

The delivery of this course is a new experience for me and probably you too. Online courses are, at first, VERY different from the traditional face-to-face or "onground" course. I think, I hope, that you will find that, after a short period of time, if you commit yourself to the course, that this method of delivery will become second-nature. You may find yourself not even noticing that you've never seen your fellow classmates in person -- you'll recognize them by their writing, by the words that they use. Be patient, keep up with the reading and work on the CD-ROM, and above all COMMUNICATE with me and your fellow students.

About the Instructor:

My work experience is that I have taught Computer Information Systems, Computer Science, Computer Applications, and Management Information Systems courses for California State University, Bakersfield (1983-1991 part-time), Bakersfield College (1991-1996) and Cerro Coso Community College (1997-Present). While at Cal State, Bakersfield I worked as an Instructional Computing Consultant. Prior to that I worked in private industry for a couple of years, worked at CSUB and have been a computer systems consultant for various companies and individuals. B.C. (before computers) I worked in construction, tended bar, worked at a gas station, managed an athletic shoe store, and was a security guard at LAX.

My educational background includes a B.S. and M.B.A from California State University, Bakersfield and a multitude of additional courses at the University of California, Santa Cruz; California State University, Long Beach; The Teletraining Institute at Oklahoma State University; and University of California, Los Angeles Extension

My personal interests include listening to and playing music (accoustic mostly - guitar, some mandolin and banjo), fishing, hiking, swimming, and biking. Click below to see my personal home page:
