Composition of the mural is structured around the range of elevations in the Eastern Sierra, where the Sierra Nevada, Great Basin and Mojave Desert bioregions converge. The mural will be composed of 6" square stoneware tiles in relief, representing the myriad species.

The Process:

Artists first select a subject and plan the design of the tile. The layout at left shows the overall placement of tiles, as a work in progress. The sketch below shows a detail of the Bighorn tile set. The finished tile is part of the banner at the top of this page.

Using a photograph, relief is added to the tile.

Natural color will be applied to bring out strong textures in the tiles, while glazes, underglazes, glass and stone mosaic will accent important features. Here, two artists work on glazing.
